MORNINGS IN THE 70s

Unread post by kampanaryo_spy »

In the 70s, waking up early in the morning was a pleasure because it meant joining Papa to buy either carabeef or pork in the market, a rickety building that stood where the present terminal is. The same building would later press Helen Bandico to death when it collapsed from strong winds in 1978.

Near the left side of Teban Dumagan's home that faced the row of Bol-anon Stores was the meat section. It bustled with activity more than the stalls that sold tabaco in sugong, rice that formed a mound on wooden square boxes marked NGA, and supas like azucarada, rolling bayan, diyoy, binangkal placed inside cellophane bags that hung from tie wires.

My memory gives me a pastiche of faces and images of that time: Tapingig, like a true war veteran, raising his bolo to chop meat; Nobing Pareja weighing entrails and extremities of beasts; Kulas Acevedo coaxing some tunes from his guitar while graceful smokes escaped from the Bowling Green tucked between his lips; dogs looking up, waiting for bloodstained manna to fall; the huge tree trunk that served as chopping board and whose top was dented from so much hammering; winged insects that ended their vigils in death inside the Coleman Petromax that sat on an empty table.

I also remember the time when Papa and I would go to the tugbungan (manugma is the term) for this---

Image

Fish then was sold not by the kilo but by tuhog (fish strung with a nipa midrib).

By the time we went home---with the sun still not out---people were already milling about at the intersection where Villamor Trading, Bert and Patring Yu’s Store, and Botica Curada were located. Many sat on the floor of these yet unopened stores while others stood and shared the day’s news. I would join all of them as we waited for this---

I couldn’t remember if that time there was a bakery in Tago. All I could remember was that pan de sal was brought from Tandag by a humungous, forest green delivery truck emblazoned on both sides with the word CASA. It was huge and tall. Like a giant’s coffin.

As the Casa panel (until now it beats me why we call a delivery van a panel.) zipped past, I would run after it ahead of other kids until it stopped at the place where Alondoy now sells pudding. Always at this area!

I would position myself just an inch from the back door so that when it swung open, I’d lose myself in the sweet aroma of oven-fresh bread. And even before I could open my eyes, people would crowd behind me, shouting a babel of monetary values to the man who put bread into a brown bag made of pattern paper, securing it by twisting it at both ends. (I wonder why bakeries don’t pack bread like this anymore.)

I’d bring the pan de sal to our hovel of a home, which was where Curada’s garage now stands, and there I would open the brown pattern paper bag and engulf myself once more with the sweet aroma.

Waiting on the table was Mama’s tsokolate. Earlier she had put this heavenly concoction in a baterol where she twirled her grooved wooden boloniyo to make the tsokolate di mabugto, meaning thicker, sweeter, and creamier. Poison never tasted so good!

When we were done eating the pan de sal that we dunked into our tsokolate, I’d put the empty pattern paper bag over my head like a sailor’s cap, never really caring if the pan de sal’s pulbos blotched my face.

Ahh, to be a carefree kid in the 70s!

Mingawi ako

Unread post by manday »

K_spy mingawi ako na gabasa nan ini, exactly you made the scenario come back to our memories. Ay ay yakadumdum pa sakaw nan CASA na panel, si Papa mag sayo gayod pag mata kay an first drop gayod nya sa iyo, ngadto da sa gayod yaon, otherwise kun late na mukadto waray nay pan, mahamuti pa an pan, tapos an supot hamot hamoton ko isab yaon, mingawon gayod ako nan ini kay si papa an iya pangmatahay sa amo pandesal mag laong sa dayon siya, bangon na kay paso pa an pan.

Pero when I was in grade six, Manong Bobot and myself, stayed in iyo Tiban's and iya Gonyang's house na an slaughter house yaon sa may kusina nila dapit kubaga adjacent da, tulay da na gamay an pagitan, that time I already knew Sapaalaska, she was "sikat' in the market , I would say, a princess. Garbusahi taraw yaon sya, hinglui daan isab sya, long legged laong pa. May ila gani mga jeep na Cecille 1, 2 and so forth. Bagan isab that time they went to this business mag patay nan kabaw, pareho ka iyo Senobyo Pareja.

Kadumdum kaw, na an likod isab nan tiyangi restaurant? na tubig gani an hilawom, ka Iyo Maldo Montenegro, iya Oyang ( famous sila nan ila dinuguan).

The Bolanons were the Marsamolos ( may classmate ako si anhin Anabelle Marsamolo) mga buwad hasta gamos ila baligya and the Bolabolas also ( kun wara ako masayop). Iya Tunika Laurente had also a store within the covered market.

The term manugma is very familiar term to me, term sa gayod ini nan ato mga ginikanan. Oh how I really miss those days, our joy and hapiness was so simple.

Pero pan novel sa gayod ikaw mag suwat, kadayawi lang na abilidad, keep up (arangi malipay magbasa nan haod nan ini). Salamat. sa sunod na kabata...

manday,

malditohi gayud iton si k_spy. paga- annawn ,la-ong pa nan mga tiguwang na may iya pa gani kuno books and dvd na puros mga award winning , an wa pa nako i-uli. bagan yaka-dumdum agaw ako na yaon pa agaw. pero yaon da gayud yaon sa kwarto ko sa tago. time pa kuman , nanga sa ya wa sa yadton announcement niya nganhi. sin-on an ga-delete?

K-spy,

manday and myself can relate to what you're talking about cz i used to go with my mom too, manugma sa bongtud. how can i forget those days, when my typical day started with a pandesal in my hand ,sat by the door of our store with my eyes kept on iyo maldo montenegro's huge dog who constantly snatched out pandesal from my hand. he knew exactly what time i was out there, he was succesful quite a number of times.and that explains that pandesal back in the days were really good that even dogs got addicted to it and that was the time that the size of pandesal was bigger than my fist not as small as binangkal )
